The Job

Sunday started out pretty normal. There is a church not far from my house that I went and checked out. They're not affiliated with CBM but their service seemed pretty similar to what I am used to. They seem a little more conservative, however. There were no women visible in the lineup of communion servers and all of the music was the of the more traditional and hotly-debated hymn style. I actually found myself quite enjoying the more traditional service. I almost wonder if an entire congregtion singing older songs with passion and in unison isn't better than more contemporary material sung by 1/3 of a congregation.

I met two of the pastors. They have a student-type group that goes out sunday nights after their evening service. I went with them last night to see spiderman 3. It was pretty good. Although I warn you now, don't go see it with comic book junkies. They will just complain about how the movie was nothing like the comics. I never read the comics. The movie was fine. Comic books are for dorks...says the chemist.... The church also has a student bible study tuesday nights that I might check out.

I started work today. I have been assigned to work with a graduate student on her research. I have my own project within her work and I will be trying to make a certain group of molecules and then string them into chains. For any chemistry types out there I am making aryl-phosphine compounds with various alkyl substituents and then trying to polymerize them. All my materials are air and water sensitive so I have to do all my work under a nitrogen atmosphere in a glovebox or on the Schlenk line.

I like the word "schlenk". Say it five times fast to yourself and see if you aren't smiling. See you can't do it. I told you so. If anyone wants an in-depth explanation of my research feel free to email me. Don't all overload my inbox now.

My research group seems really good and the girl I am working with is a really good teacher and very nice. She will be going on vacation in two weeks and then I will be left alone for a month to carry on the work by myself. It's kind of cool to be able to work more independently than the other summer students but also more intimidating because I will have nobody to ask questions of who is current on my material. I will really be on my own. I don't see Thorsten or Andreas much. They each have their own "supevisor" that they work with. Although it's not like I can copy their papers anyway.

Everything else is fine. One of my housemates really likes to have political discussions.

I noticed Jonny and Julie are the only non-Gibsons to have left comments. If you are reading this blog even semi-regularly please drop me a comment just so I have a feel for how popular I am.

No, seriously, I am curious if anyone else besides my family is paying any attention. Although I suppose even if only Jon and Julie read it, the blog is worth writing. Like I said, I just want to quantify my popularity.

Somehow I bet words like "quantify" don't exactly help me much.

Holy schlenk, your quite the busy bee doing this whole independent thing. It sounds as if your doing really well. I'm not going to lie. I was excited when I saw you posted a new entry today. That may sound sad but don't judge-I don't have cable ok?! Are you doing the long distance thing with your gf that lives in victoria? Or are you taking a break while your away? I am looking forward to seeing spidey #3 this coming weekend. The one thing I like about the Spiderman movies is they always have awesome soundtracks (that was such a music geek thing to say, but oh well). You should seriously check out the a song that was written for the movie Spiderman 3. It's by Snow Patrol and it's called "Signal Fire," I love it. Yea, look it up on Youtube for sure and let me know what you think of it. OH MAN! This is insane Joel is getting married this summer! Thats no miss print...The mooseman is tying the knot on July 14! I m so excited. I'm realizing now that i should have put this comment into an email-aw crap. But whatever-you said you wanted comments so here ya go!

So I thought I would make a comment just so you feel popular. Someone has got to boost your ego. So I am glad that living arrangements and work are going well.
Life is good here. My students haven’t' tried to kill me yet so that’s good. I am actually having a wonderful time with them and will be sad to leave on Friday. The summer 2007 job hunt is on so hopefully my bank account will start to look better. Oh and I am getting rid of my N this Friday so hopefully I will pass and drop my nerd status.
Take care!

Wow, I am so impressed! I never took you for the blogging type Greg, let alone a blogger with a regularily updated blog! Although you've always been a decent writer, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Sounds like you are having a good time so far out East (I know it's "central canada," but if you look on a map... it is clearly East of the center! Looking forward to hearing more about your adventures in chemistry!

Also, if you want to quantify your popularity, try facebook. At the click of a button it will tell you exactly how many friends you have. Quite useful, really.

Actually I find the comments as much fun as the blog itself. Maybe I'll start one myself on my adventures in Antarctica. Happy polymerizing in the schlenk!

Heyo! I must admit I almost forgot all about your blog until last night when I saw your dad the El Salvador get together. But I have read all the entries and all the comments now. Very entertaining and good to hear that you are settling in. OH, this reminds me, you're on my reference list on my resume, oops, I guess you can't be reached at home anymore. Ah well. Anywho, watch out for cheetahs and headwinds,
Hasta luego

so well i only was briefly skimming your blog due to my severe lack of time and i happened to read the part where it said that barely any non-gibsons had commented on your blog so i figurred that i better say something ... i am gonna post my name anonymously... but if you just think of the number 6... or i suppose more recently the number 2.. but maybe 3 then you know who i am .... I repeat i am a non-gibson... and i know you know who I am ... Now you can feel popular and loved :)
